OpenAI forward deployed engineer salary: what its job postings show
OpenAI posts base pay for its US forward deployed roles, starting with $185,000 to $300,000 for the standard engineer band. It does not post what equity or bonus adds, so here is what the postings show, what they leave out and what to ask.

key points
- OpenAI's current US Forward Deployed Engineer postings (San Francisco, Seattle, and healthcare, legal and financial services roles in New York) post base pay of $185,000 to $300,000 a year 1,2,3,4,5.
- Level changes the band: the Deployment Lead, FDE role posts $230,000 to $294,000 and the New York manager role $302,000 to $385,000 6,7.
- The range is base only. The postings add equity and a performance bonus for eligible employees on top, and publish no amount for either 1.
- Of 30 postings in OpenAI's Forward Deployed Engineering department on October 23, 2026, 14 show no pay range, all of them outside the US 8,9.
- Older and government postings carry different bands: the Forward Deployed Software Engineer title tops out at $325,000 and the government role posts $145,800 to $280,000 10,11.
OpenAI's posted base pay for a US forward deployed engineer is $185,000 to $300,000 a year. That is the range on its Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) postings in San Francisco and Seattle, and on its healthcare, legal and financial services FDE postings, all read on October 23, 2026 1,2,3,4,5. It is base salary only: the postings say total compensation also includes equity and, for eligible employees, a performance-related bonus, and none gives an amount for either 1. The Deployment Lead, FDE role posts $230,000 to $294,000 and the New York manager role $302,000 to $385,000 6,7.
Every pay figure below comes from OpenAI's own job postings, except one self-reported Levels.fyi range that we quote only to explain why we do not use it. The legal points come from statutes. A posting is OpenAI's wording at one moment. It is not what anyone was paid and not a promise of an offer. Where nothing reliable is published, we say so. For pay across employers see our forward deployed engineer salary guide, and for another employer that posts its ranges see Palantir forward deployed engineer salary.
What does OpenAI post as base pay for forward deployed engineers?
On October 23, 2026, OpenAI's public job board listed 800 open positions, 30 of them in its Forward Deployed Engineering department 8. Sixteen of those 30 show a salary range, all for US cities; the other 14 show none 9. Two postings outside that department also use the "forward deployed" title, one for government work and one in security. The table lists every range we found. Each is an annual salary in US dollars 9.
| Role as titled | Location listed | Posted base salary | Experience the posting asks for | Listed (feed date) |
|---|---|---|---|---|

Dates are the published dates in OpenAI's job board data feed 9. A posting can be edited after it is published, so a date shows when it was listed, not when its range was set. Four patterns stand out.
- The standard band is wide. The FDE range spans $115,000, so its ceiling is about 62% above its floor. The postings do not say what puts someone at the bottom or top. They say only that base pay may vary with market location, job-related knowledge, skills and experience 1.
- Level moves the floor more than the ceiling. The Deployment Lead band starts $45,000 above the FDE floor but ends $6,000 below the FDE ceiling, so the two overlap almost entirely. The manager band starts $2,000 above the FDE ceiling 1,6,7.
- The older software engineer title has its own band. Forward Deployed Software Engineer postings, listed from November 2025 to March 2026, top out at $325,000, which is $25,000 above the FDE ceiling, and the New York and Seattle ones start at $153,000, which is $32,000 below the FDE floor 10,15,16. The postings do not say whether the title was replaced, re-leveled or re-banded, so ask a recruiter which band applies to you.
- Government and security roles sit apart. The government posting asks for an active TS/SCI clearance and posts $145,800 to $280,000; the feed dates it to September 2025, more than a year before we read it, so its band may predate the newer ones 11,9. The Forward Deployed Security Engineer role is in the Security department, asks for an active US security clearance and posts $266,000 to $445,000 20. These are different teams with different requirements, not proof that clearance or security work carries a fixed premium.
Base versus total. Every figure in the table is base salary. Equity and bonus come on top, and OpenAI publishes no amount for either. Do not compare these ranges with total compensation numbers from another employer.
Does the posted range include equity and bonus?
No. The postings we expanded in full say total compensation is in addition to the listed salary range and includes equity that OpenAI calls "generous", a performance-related bonus for eligible employees and benefits 1,11,17,7. The benefits listed include health coverage, a 401(k) with employer match, up to 24 weeks of paid leave for birth parents and 20 for non-birthing parents, a learning stipend and relocation support for eligible employees 1. The San Francisco FDE posting also says OpenAI may modify base pay and other compensation components at any time based on individual performance, team or company results, or market conditions 1.
What is missing is the part that can matter most. No posting states the size of the equity grant, the form it takes, the vesting schedule, how often grants are refreshed, the bonus target or whether a sign-on payment exists. The job board's data lists equity with no amount on every posting that shows a range 9.
Third-party sites partly fill the gap, with limits. Levels.fyi collects anonymous and verified pay from current and former employees. Its main OpenAI page, updated October 23, 2026, lists many job titles but not a forward deployed one 21. It does have a separate page for the title, headed with a total compensation range of $640,000 to $902,000 or more, and its FAQ names $902,000 as the highest package reported 22. We do not use those figures as a benchmark. The page's own data counts two reports, it says it needs four more software engineer submissions at OpenAI to unlock its table, and it does not show the two reports, so we cannot see what they include 22. Two self-reported numbers cannot show where a typical offer falls, and a total that includes stock cannot be set beside the posted base ranges above.
The main Levels.fyi OpenAI page describes the stock as RSUs on a four-year vesting schedule and shows three patterns: 25% a year; 25% after the first year and then monthly; or 6.25% a quarter 21. That is the site's summary, not OpenAI's offer terms, and the postings do not say what a grant is made of 21,1. OpenAI also announced on October 28, 2025 that it had completed a recapitalization: its for-profit is now a public benefit corporation, OpenAI Group PBC, controlled by the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation 23. The announcement does not describe employee equity, so descriptions written before it may not match what a 2026 offer contains.
For those reasons we do not give a total compensation figure for an OpenAI forward deployed engineer. The only published total we found rests on two self-reported entries, and adding a guess to a verified base range would blur the one thing the postings do establish.
Why do some OpenAI forward deployed engineer postings show no salary?
Fourteen of the 30 postings in the Forward Deployed Engineering department show no range. All are outside the US: the board lists them in the UAE, the UK, Spain, Germany, France, Switzerland, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Australia 9,24. The postings do not say why, so we do not guess at a reason.
Two US state laws are relevant to the postings that do show pay. California requires an employer with 15 or more employees to include the pay scale in a job posting, and defines it as a good faith estimate of the salary or hourly wage range the employer reasonably expects to pay for the position on hire 25. Washington requires employers with 15 or more employees to disclose the wage scale or salary range plus a general description of all of the benefits and other compensation to be offered 26. OpenAI's Seattle postings use the same compensation wording as its other US postings, naming equity and a bonus without amounts, and we did not assess whether any posting meets either law. The New York postings fall under New York rules that we did not review.
Two practical points follow. A posted band is the employer's own estimate, not a commitment. And in California an employer must give an applicant the pay scale for a position on reasonable request, so ask for it early. California employers also may not seek an applicant's salary history, though they may ask about salary expectations 25. Other states differ.
What should you clarify before negotiating an OpenAI offer?
A posted range tells you where OpenAI says its offers for a posting are likely to fall. It does not tell you where yours will. These are the questions the postings leave open:
- Which posting and band does the offer map to? FDE, Deployment Lead and the older Forward Deployed Software Engineer title carry different ranges, and some roles also ask for different years of experience (5+, 6+ or 7+ in the table) 1,10,6.
- Where in the band is the base, and why? The postings name market location, job-related knowledge, skills and experience as the factors 1. Ask which of them placed you.
- What are the equity terms? Ask for the instrument, the number of units or the value at grant, how that value is set, the vesting schedule, refresh practice, what happens if you leave and what chances to sell exist. The postings answer none of these.
- What is the bonus? The postings say performance-related bonuses go to eligible employees 1. Ask what makes you eligible, the target and how performance is measured.
- What is one-time money? The postings offer relocation assistance 1. Ask what it covers, and whether a sign-on payment is possible.
- What does the work pattern cost you? The San Francisco FDE posting describes three office days a week and travel of up to 50% 1. Ask how travel expenses and time are handled.
- Is it in writing? The postings reserve the right to change compensation components 1. Get each term in your offer letter.
If a role is filled on an H-1B visa, the Department of Labor's public disclosure files for Labor Condition Applications may list the job title and the wage rate the employer reports for the worker. The files contain information provided by employers 27,28. We did not use them here, because the files are large spreadsheets and we did not check them for OpenAI entries under this title. For how other employers structure offers, see our overview of forward deployed engineer pay and the Palantir pay breakdown.
How should you judge other OpenAI forward deployed engineer salary figures?
You will find OpenAI forward deployed engineer numbers on salary aggregators and interview-prep sites. Before you rely on one, ask three questions. Does it name a dated OpenAI posting, or only an average? Does it say which city and level it describes? Does it say whether the figure is base or total compensation, and whether the total includes stock valued at grant or at a later price?
A figure that fails any of them cannot be set beside the ranges above. The Levels.fyi range quoted earlier is an example: it names no OpenAI posting and rests on two reports. The age of a posting matters too. The ranges in our table were listed between September 2025 and October 2026, and a band on an older listing may not match what offers use today 9. We checked each range against the live posting page on October 23, 2026. Re-check before you negotiate, and treat our table as a dated snapshot.
Questions readers ask
How much does an OpenAI forward deployed engineer make?
OpenAI's postings show a base salary range of $185,000 to $300,000 for its standard US Forward Deployed Engineer role, read on October 23, 2026. The postings say total compensation also includes equity and, for eligible employees, a performance-related bonus, in amounts OpenAI does not publish. Levels.fyi shows a total compensation range for the title, but it rests on two self-reported entries, so we do not treat it as a benchmark.
Does OpenAI give forward deployed engineers equity?
The postings say so. Every posting that shows a salary range is labeled as offering equity, and the ones we read in full say total compensation includes equity OpenAI describes as generous. They give no amount, form or vesting schedule. Levels.fyi describes RSUs on a four-year vesting schedule and shows more than one pattern, but that is a third-party summary, so ask for the grant terms in writing.
Why does OpenAI show no salary on some forward deployed engineer jobs?
Fourteen of the 30 postings in its Forward Deployed Engineering department show none, and all are outside the US. The postings do not explain why. The 16 that show a range are in San Francisco, Seattle and New York, and California and Washington both have laws on posting pay ranges.
Can you negotiate an OpenAI forward deployed engineer offer?
The postings say base pay varies with location, knowledge, skills and experience, which implies the offer depends on the candidate. We found no source on how often or how far OpenAI moves an offer, so treat any claim about typical negotiated gains as unsourced. What you can ask about is the band and level, where in the band you fall, the equity terms, bonus eligibility and relocation.
Is the OpenAI forward deployed engineer salary different in San Francisco, New York and Seattle?
On the current FDE postings the range is the same, $185,000 to $300,000, in San Francisco, Seattle and, for the healthcare, legal and financial services roles, New York. The older Forward Deployed Software Engineer postings show a lower floor in New York and Seattle ($153,000) than in San Francisco ($185,000). The postings do not explain either pattern.
